10-2B Wallpaper Patterns What are wallpaper patterns? What types of symmetry do wallpaper patterns have?

Wallpaper Patterns To decorate an entire wall, you need more than a frieze pattern that extends in a horizontal line. Wallpaper patterns are repeating patterns that cover a plane.

Definition A wallpaper pattern is a plane pattern with translation symmetry along more than one line.

Wallpaper pattern What shape was used to create this pattern? Does the pattern repeat in different directions?

Name the types of symmetry Translational Rotational: 180° Line Glide-reflection ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞ ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞

Name the types of symmetry Translational Rotational: 90°,180°, 270° Line Glide-reflection

On The Wall Turn in your books to page 696. Examine each of the African fabric patterns for symmetry. Does the pattern have glide–reflection symmetry? Does the pattern have line symmetry? Does the pattern have rotational symmetry? Glide-reflection, rotation (180°), vertical line, horizontal line, and translation.

What are wallpaper patterns? A wallpaper pattern is a plane pattern with translation symmetry along more than one line. What types of symmetry do wallpaper patterns have? Translational, rotational, line and glide-reflection symmetry.
