Parental controls  Block sites that are not age appropriate  Block inappropriate and illegal material  Set timings – automatic switch off at bedtime  Monitor activity Have any of you already set any parental controls on your child’s devices? What type of controls have you set? It is possible to do the following: It’s never too late to put these restrictions in place.

Parental Controls As a minimum, please set parental controls on your search engines, youtube account and the mobile phone your child uses. One of the most popular search engines in the world is Google. You can visit Google’s informative safety centre for simple step by step guides Here are a few options available to you: Visit the Google home page – and click on the ‘search setting’ tab in the top right hand corner. SOLUTIONS Music Monitor music downloaded through iTunes and limit access to explicit content. Websites Monitor and filter websites based on categories and auto enablement of Safe Search. Videos Monitor and filter Online TV by show rating and block inappropriate YouTube clips. Instant Messaging Monitor or block instant messaging applications and online chat rooms. Games Limit online interactions with popular games and restrict access to gaming websites. Social Networking Monitor postings on social network sites for personal information or block social networking sites.

SOLUTIONS Instant Alerts Text Message, or Phone alerts when someone visits inappropriate content. Choose to block , allow it with only approved contacts, or allow unrestricted . Activity Reports Smart, informative reports of online activity with summary reports sent to your inbox. Remote Management Change your settings anytime from anywhere using only your web browser. Time Limits Choose the times of the day that the Internet is available or set a total time that can be spent online. Multiple Profiles Setup monitoring and filtering policies for each user.

Messages for children Treat your password like your toothbrush – keep it to yourself! Only give your mobile number or personal website address to trusted friends. Block the bully – learn to block or report someone who is behaving badly. Save the evidence – learn how to keep records of offending text messages, pictures or online conversations. Don’t retaliate or reply. Check your profile and make sure it doesn’t include any personal information. Always respect others – be careful what you say online and what images you send. Think before you send – whatever you send can be made public very quickly and could stay online forever. Look out for your friends – and do something if you think they are at risk. Tell your parent, carer or a teacher if something or someone makes you feel uncomfortable or worried.

More messages Never share your phone number. Never share your address to people. Don’t tell strangers were your going over online and what time you are going. Don’t put your date of birth and birthday. Never add strangers online. Never put a photo of you online where strangers can see. Do not tell people your user name and first name

Final Word Remember, the internet hosts many exciting opportunities for education. The online world is a wonderful place for young people to explore, with unprecedented opportunities for learning and creativity. Of course, just like in the real world, there are risks and dangers we should be aware of and we should all act to protect young people from these.
