The Berlin Wall

Building Of The Berlin Wall It was built on the night of August 13, 1961 East German government began to close the border. The border to West Berlin was closed. Barbed wire and fences were put up so no one could cross to the other side. It was a wall consisting of concrete elements and square blocks.

Purpose The purpose of building this wall was to keep East Berlin people in. It separated West Berlin, Democracy, and East Berlin, which was Communist. Facts: Families were separated from each other by this wall. They waved at each other for awhile but after a while, the guards wouldn’t even let them do that.

Facts There were many attempts to get to the other side to freedom in West Berlin. One of the most famous cases was about an 18 year old boy named Peter Fechter. One day, when he decided to try to get to the other side, he started climbing and was shot by a order guard officer. He continued to climb but ran out of energy as he got to the top. He fell back down to the East side. Peter was just left there suffering until he eventually bled to death. Then the guards carried off his body. He was the 50 th person to die trying to escape at the Berlin wall.

The Fall On November 9 th, 1989, an announcement was made by East German Government official Gunter Schabowski. He stated, “Permanent relocations can be done through all border checkpoints between East Germany into West Germany.” People were in shock. They couldn’t believe they could actually cross to the other side now. The Berlin wall was eventually chipped away into smaller pieces. The pieces have become collectibles and are stored in both homes and museums.
