The small turbine that does great things Group 3-12 Wang Jiale (Leader)(1O3) Daniel Hong (1O3) Michael Liu (1O3) Daryl Chionh (1O3)

Problems Petrol, a natural resource is getting lesser day by day as the demand for it increases each day due to the increasing number of cars Disputes in countries in Middle East, a major oil supplier, caused the oil prices to rise due to the lesser import of oil. Waste from cars such as carbon monoxide is not made used of.

Our solution: The small turbine that does great things Mounted 5cm behind the exhaust pipe at the end of the exhaust pipe to harness the kinetic energy from the exhaust and the wind to generate electricity. (Turbine 5cm behind the exhaust pipe) It can be used to power small components such as the window-wiper, lights in the car and the air con blower. It is light, cheap and efficient. It makes the petrol more efficient by making less loss. Works when the car’s engine is on but the car is not moving.

Reasons for the particular location of the turbine. A turbine mounted 5 cm behind the exhaust pipe can: - get the maximum amount of kinetic energy available from the exhaust pipe and the surrounding wind when the car is driving. - Air around it can cool it and prevent it form overheating. - Will not block the exhaust pipe - Easy to maintain

Colour and material of turbine Colour Grey, because it does not trap too much heat, and does not look too bad when dirtied by the exhaust. Material Stainless Steel, as it is light and durable. Also when small objects such as stones hit it, it will not be damaged too badly.

Limitations of the invention The electricity generated is only able to power built-in electronic components in the car, not external things. Lubrication oil is needed to allow the turbine to turn smoothly. Maintenance is required

How the product look like (I) Exhaust Pipe CAR

How the product will look like (II) Turbine Electronic Components Battery Generator

How the product will look like (III) Gear with protection Generator

The Invention Located 5 cm behind the exhaust pipe Hanged down form the bottom of the car Turning turbine turns the generator which generates electricity to be stored in a separate battery, then the electricity is used by the electronic components.

Near similar inventions (1) There is a invention: A very big turbine mounted in front of a car, to generate electricity to power the whole car AdvantagesDisadvantages Uses energy from the wind to power the entire car, thus eliminating the need for the use of petrol. Too heavy Expensive Sometimes unable to start the car May not generate enough electricity to power the entire car As a result, the product is never put into the market

Near similar inventions (2) Another near-similar invention is a turbine used on many modern commercial planes. However, it is only deployed when the plane’s engines fail, generating electricity only for the cockpit. AdvantagesDisadvantages Works very well in an emergency May save the plane and the passengers Only for use when both engines fail Not reusable Only works when the plane is travelling over 200km/h Only used on planes Many pilots agree that it is a perfect invention in an emergency, however it does not save fuel and it is only used on modern planes.

Calculations (Part 1) For example… Air-con blower (Main component in air conditioner) - Uses 200 Watt motor - Running current about 17 ampere. - About 0.8% of engine power. - Which is about 0.8% of fuel consumption

Calculations (Part 2) After the calculations, it could be concluded that: -If every car’s monthly fuel consumption is 100 litres, 800 millilitres can be saved just by using the invention to power the air-con blower. - Singapore has about cars in 2010, so, if all cars in Singapore use this invention, litres of fuel can be saved monthly. (Based on the above condition)

So… Just by making the invention power the air-con blower, in Singapore, litres of fuel can be saved monthly if each car uses 100 litres of fuel per month.
