Standards for Technical Educators Occupational Safety & Health

Lesson Description This presentation of OSHA standards is intended to assist you in providing the safety and health information and instruction needed for you and your students to work at minimal risk in the technical program environment.

Lesson Goal The goal of this presentation is to educate you in the recognition, avoidance, and prevention of unsafe and unhealthy working conditions in the technical program laboratory as it relates to the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

Performance Objectives Participants will demonstrate the ability to recognize, avoid and prevent unsafe and unhealthy working conditions. Participants will develop and implement an effective lab safety plan.

Encourage employers and employees to reduce workplace hazards and to improve existing or implement new safety and health programs. OSHA’S PURPOSE

Maintain a reporting and record keeping system to monitor job related injuries and illnesses. Establish training programs to increase the number and competence of occupational safety and health personnel.

Provide for the development, analysis, evaluation and approval of occupational safety and health programs. Develop mandatory job safety and health standards and enforce them effectively.

General Duty Clause Each employer “shall furnish… a place of employment which is free from recognized hazards that are causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees.”

INSPECTIONS Upon presenting appropriate credentials to the owner, operator or agent in charge, an OSHA compliance officer is authorized to inspect lab facilities with little or no notice.

Report to OSHA within 8 hours the death of an employee or hospitalization of three or more employees. Records are maintained on a calendar year basis, and are maintained for 5 years.

EMPLOYER POSTINGS Copies of the OSHA Act and relevant rules and regulations must be made available to employees.
