Unit 2: Writing and Constructing Arguments Lesson 3: Thesis Statements and Arguable Topic Sentences SWBAT write arguable thesis statements. SWBAT write arguable topic sentences that tie back to the thesis statements. Grammar Objective: SWBAT identify nouns, adjectives, adverbs, articles, linking verbs, helping verbs, action verbs, the simple subject, simple predicate, and complements of a sentence.

Thesis Statements 1.The thesis statement is what you are trying to prove. 2.ARGUABLE 3.Maps out structure of your entire essay

Topic Sentences and Thesis Statements Topic sentences need to be arguable, focused, and they need to tie back to the thesis statements. For now, I want you to focus on writing strong, arguable topic sentences that tie back to the thesis. I will give you your thesis statement for now. Later on, you will develop them on your own.

Thesis Formula: A = Your Topic – What, specifically, are you writing about? B = Your Opinion – What, specifically, are you arguing? C = Your Rationale– Why do you think so? How will you prove your opinion? You need at least three reasons. Formula: A is B because 1, 2, and 3. The Boston Red Sox are the best team in baseball because of their powerful offense, their tenacity, and their deep sense of tradition.

Your Reasons (123) become your Topic Sentences Thesis Statement: ”Bishop Machebeuf is the best high school in the diocese of Denver because of its close- knit community, its remarkable students, and its deep sense of tradition.” Topic Sentence 1 (Reason 1): "The closeness of the Machebeuf community and the way in which students, faculty and staff care for one another set it apart from all other schools in the area.” Topic Sentence 2 (Reason 2): "The students at Bishop Machebeuf give the school a spirit of enthusiasm that make it a truly unique place to be.” Topic Sentence 3 (Reason 3): "A sense of history and tradition distinguishes Bishop Machebeuf among its peers and establishes it as one of the finest places to learn in the whole diocese."

You may either now work on vocabulary, Grammar Video 5 (including practice problems), or your on-going project. On-Going Project Work on your on-going projects. If you did not bring your stuff for the on-going projects, you may study vocabulary, work ahead on grammar, or do your topic sentences. Thesis and Arguable Topic Sentences

Expectations You may ask your neighbor for help on grammar. I am focusing on group 1. You need to give me at least 5-10 minutes with them before I can answer any questions. If you have a question, you can study your vocabulary or work on a part where you don’t have questions. Put a Styrofoam cup on your desk, and I’ll be with you ASAP. NO SITTING THERE AND STARING BLANKLY!!! If you seem distracted or you seem like you are distracting others, you will be moved. You may walk around and stretch your legs if you need to.
