Death and Particular Judgment Chapter 25 Lesson 2

“With him who fears the Lord it will go well at the end; on the day of his death he will be blessed” Sir 1:11 How should we prepare for a good death and a positive judgment?

We can prepare for a holy death by living a holy life. Learn about God and love him faithfully Follow God’s law Pray Receive the sacraments

Anointing of the Sick Matter: anointing with oil and laying on of hands by a priest Form the words: “Through this holy anointing, may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up. Amen.” Effects: unites the sick and suffering with Christ in his Passion in his death and in his Resurrection; gives peace and strength to endure suffering and illness; forgives sins; restores health if it is God’s will; prepares for the passage to eternal life.

Anointing of the Sick 1. If one is conscious when he receives the Anointing of the Sick, he can receive the Sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist. 2. If he receives the Eucharist for the last time before his death, this Communion is called viaticum, food for the journey. 3. It sustains the soul and strengthens it for eternal union with God. 4. If one is unconscious, he may still receive the Anointing of the Sick and also receive apostolic pardon. Should he regain consciousness, he should go to confession. 5. Anointing of the sick may be received by anyone who is gravely ill and may be received more than once.

Prayer to St. Joseph for a happy death Sweet Saint Joseph be thou near me, When my soul is called away, From this earth so dark and dreary, To the bright eternal day. Bring with thee my dearest Jesus, In whose wounds I fain would hide, And with Mary my sweet mother, Come dear father to my side.
