Our Local Priorities for Rowena Langtry Associate Director of Unscheduled Care Rowena Langtry

Our Vision To make Leicestershire and Rutland the healthiest place in the UK Our mission: Improving health for all through excellence in partnership Our goals: Better health, better value, better care

Saving money in the new financial climate Looking at improving our quality and productivity This year 5.5% increase in our money from the government – we will receive £900 million, an increase of around £50 million After this, the NHS nationally will need to save £15-20 billion by 2014 Still need to commission (buy) best quality and value health services Whichever party wins the election, there will still be a public sector squeeze on funding

Areas for difficult decisions Areas where health problems are not life threatening but are high cost – an East Midlands wide approach Looking at whether some people are having treatments that don’t improve the condition – e.g. hip and knee replacements Encouraging people to take responsibility for their own health, e.g. by reducing intake of alcohol

National priorities – the same as last year Improving cleanliness and reducing health care associated infections Improving access through the 18 week target and better access to GPs (including evenings and weekends Keeping adults and children well, improving health and reducing health inequalities, particularly in: - Cancer - Stroke - Maternity and newborn care - Children (e.g. obesity, encouraging breastfeeding) Improving patient experience, and staff satisfaction and engagement Being ready for emergencies, such as pandemic flu

Local priorities 2010/11– your views Reducing health inequalities Improving health and wellbeing of people with learning disabilities Improving prisoners’ health and wellbeing Reducing the number of smokers Improving obesity/physical activity programmes Improving diabetes care Increasing the choice of place of death Improving access to psychological therapies

Local priorities (2) – your views Improving community based help for people with alcohol problems Improving cardiovascular (heart) care Cancer care Better patient experience Improving services for people with dementia Services for older people ‘Aiming high’ for disabled children Personal care plans for all patients with long term conditions
