Students Consulting on Teaching Alan White and Ann Macfadyen

SCOTs is... A pilot project at University of Lincoln which aims to... enhance teaching and learning through individualized teacher-led student consultant feedback be a valuable resource for lecturers to get objective student feedback on the teaching and learning in their classes It has... been funded by the University through ‘Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund’ monies

SCOTs consultants... are students who have an interest in the teaching and learning processes and the enhancement of the student experience have undertaken training before working on the project attend regular SCOT meetings and are required to undertake refresher training as appropriate are paid

Lecturers... Contact the SCOTs coordinator to request to be observed Meet with the student consultant to discuss what they wish feedback on, clarify expectations and boundaries and confirm practical arrangements Undertake the teaching Meet with the student for the confidential feedback Return an evaluation form to the SCOTS coordinator

SCOTs student consultants Contact and meet the lecturer to discuss details Observe the teaching Talk to the students (if requested by the lecturer) Prepare and give written or verbal feedback (as requested by the lecturer) Reflect on their experiences (on a secure virtual site) for personal reflection and to share their learning with other student consultants (lecturers are never identified)

The SCOT student coordinator... Assigns a student consultant to work with the lecturer, based on the students strengths and details of the lecturer's request Passes the lecturer's contact details on to the student Sends the lecturer an evaluation form Collects statistical information for monitoring and evaluation

Discussion Points (optional) What strategies do you currently use for review of teaching in your area of responsibility? What reasons are there for reviewing teachers in the classroom? What other strategies are there apart from SCOTS? What are the benefits and challenges of each approach? Who should be in control?
