Area primarily covered in desert. In order to grow crops people must irrigate their fields In Egypt, there is an oasis, that allows for some crops to be grown  Oasis – a fertile spot in the desert where water is found. Niger has subsistence farming and grows grains  subsistence farming – farming where most of what is grown is consumed by the farmer and family. Leave little to sell The more rainfall this region has, the more crops  More water = more crops Subsistence Farming

Morocco grows barley and wheat Libya and Algeria have large amounts of petroleum Nomadic herding is a common way of living in North Africa  bringing individual animals together into a group (herd), maintaining the group and moving the group from place to place  Remember – a nomad is a desert wanderer

Located on the Nile River Built to prevent the annual flooding of the Nile. Also built to provide farmers with irrigation Created hydroelectric power

What your North Africa row should look like… North Africa Subsistence Farming Nomadic Herding Morocco = grains & oil Libya & Algeria = oil Hydroelectric power from Aswan High Dam Oasis - a fertile spot in the desert where water is found Subsistence Farming - farming where most of what is grown is consumed by the farmer and family. Leave little to sell

Nomadic herding  What is this? Farmers in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe, grow tea and coffee as a cash crop  A crop grown to sell Trees are an important resource so people can cut them down and sell them as exports  But do they really want to cut them down?  What does cutting down the trees do?

What your East Africa row should look like… East Africa Cash Crops Nomadic Herding Coffee Tea Trees Cash Crops – a crop grown to sell

Land Used For- Hunting and gathering Livestock raising Cash Crop farming Nomadic herding

Tropical Rainforest Gum, rubber, Kola-nuts, palm oil The forests primary resource is commercial timber Deforestation is becoming a growing problem  WHY?! Over 8,500 rare plant species and animals  At risk for being endangered and hunted There are many diverse fruits

The Kola-Nut is a unique and common symbol in many Nigerian tribes. Bitter taste and highly caffeinated Medicinal purposes, cuisine item, spiritual ceremonies

Palm Oil

What your Central Africa row should look like… Central Africa Livestock Raising Cash Crops Nomadic Herding Rubber Palm Oil Timber Deforestation – the cutting down of trees

Ghana and Cameroon have major cash crops of cocoa and coffee Nigeria is a major oil producer Oil = $$$$ (remember??) Raising livestock and fishing are important for families Ghana was once called the “Gold Coast” African gold, copper, silver, uranium, titanium, and diamonds

What your West Africa row should look like… West Africa Cash Crops Fishing Livestock raising Cocoa Coffee Gold Copper Silver Uranium Diamond OIL

Land used for Livestock raising and Commercial Farming Resources include: diamonds, coal, uranium, iron ore, zinc, and other gems This region also provides an important resource – hydroelectric power

Zimbabwe = iron ore South Africa = platinum, gold, diamonds

Known as conflict diamonds Refers to a diamond mined in a war zone Sold to finance the invading army’s war efforts (pays for their war) Africa is known for two- thirds of the world’s diamond extractions Panning for Diamonds in Sierra Leone

What your South Africa row should look like… South Africa Livestock Raising Commercial Farming DIAMONDS Coal Uranium Gemstones Hydroelectric Power Platinum Iron Ore Blood Diamonds – (conflict diamonds)dia monds mined in war zones to help fund the war

Variety of crops Farming is a MAJOR part of Africa’s economy Raw materials Manufactured goods Mining People move to cities to apply for jobs in factories
