World War I The Great War and A New Economic Order,

DRILL What is a friend?

OUTLINE 1. Causes of the war –a. Alliances and balance of power –b. Neutrality –c. Freedom of the seas/submarine warfare –d. Zimmerman telegram

OBJECTIVE Identify the roles that friends have in order to explain the causes of WWI

Causes of the War Imperialism—countries dominating other countries socially, economically, politically Nationalism—extreme patriotism Militarism—”might makes right”—military power is the most important thing Alliances—protection deals between countries

Causes of the War Alliances and “balance of power”—like the Cold War (neither side used a nuclear bomb because the other side could have used one too) Neutrality—official position of US, stay out of the war, but it traded mostly with Britain and France

Document: US Exports

Alliances Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy were allied in Central Europe. (Central Powers) England and France in Western Europe were allied (Allied Powers) with Russia in the East. Together, they would fight toward Central Europe from two sides.

Drill If a war was being fought near the US, what actions would be likely to get the US involved? What things would the US have to do in order to stay out of the war?

Acronym MAIN + Spark Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism Archduke… Read and illustrate

The spark Austria-Hungary’s Archduke (man about to be king) is assassinated. A-H declares war on the country the killer is from (Serbia), Countries allied with Serbia have to protect it. DON’T COPY: Imagine if Saudi Arabia, Russia, and China had all been allied with Afghanistan on September 11 th... The WTC attacks might have started another world war.

Drill What do media outlets do to get you to buy specific products? Does it work?

Propaganda

sr004.htm German propaganda poster: The U-boats are out there!

Lord Bryce Reading Questions What is Lord Bryce describing in this report? What kind of impact would this report have on the American public? What are British motives in generating such a report? Based on British motive, can the accounts be considered credible? Why/why not?

German U-Boats

LUSITANIA incident (May 1915) German U-Boat torpedoes the Lusitania off the coast of Britain. She sinks in 18 minutes. Lusitania is a passenger liner, 1,195 people die, including 123 Americans.

Sussex Pledge In 1916, Wilson is able to get the German government to suspend submarine warfare on non-military shipping. Germans want USA to get Britain to suspend its blockade, which we won’t do; unrestricted submarine warfare resumes in February 1917.

Causes, continued... Freedom of the seas/submarine warfare— Germany attacked any ship it thought might be dealing with its enemies (Britain and France). Zimmerman Note—Germany sent a secret note to Mexico asking it for help in case the US joined the war. Mexico would attack the US and try to take Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico.

Summary What are the mitigating factors that led to WWI? Who is allied with whom? What caused the US to become involved?
