THE FUTURE OF MATRICULATION IN BSS The Future of Matriculation in BSS

THE FUTURE OF MATRICULATION IN BSS Current Situation There is a significant demand due to a)Economic recession b) Equivalence issues c) Local university admission policies d) The students save a year We do not cater sufficiently to the needs of the Matric stream – Faculty training, teaching strategies, image, results, acknowledgment of achievements – Weaker students are forced into the matric stream thereby affecting the performance Higher demand in outstation campuses – and suburban areas Academic calendar is designed without due focus on matric Career Guidance is geared towards A levels Only Science subjects are offered – Matric offers a lot of social science combinations too which are not offered in BSS

THE FUTURE OF MATRICULATION IN BSS Recommendations We need to provide a renewed focus on Matriculation – from admin to teachers and plan to initiate an FSC offering, eventually Provide proper ownership – Career Counseling, extra curricular and teacher training Bifurcation by choice not assessment Celebrate the Matric achievements Bifurcation at the beginning of 8 th Value addition to justify fee structure in Matric courses Focused marketing and promotion Positive liaison with Local Boards

Implications 1)If Matric is adapted with separate focus: 1)Will open BSS to a new demographic 2)Where there is a demand, we must provide 3)We acknowledge that not only low income families are interested in Matriculation 4)Venturing towards Fsc. will increase our growth and improve the brand image 2)If it is abandoned 1)There is a strong consensus that we cannot drop matric and alienate a significant portion of our population.
