Story Unit 5 Notes

What is the Classical Paradigm? Most popular type of narrative structure Based on a conflict between a protagonist who initiates the action and an antagonist who resists it Most films begin with an implied dramatic question Viewers want to know how the protagonist will get what he/she wants in the face of opposition Builds to a dramatic conflict Resolution occurs

Realistic Narratives Prefer loose discursive plots with no clearly defined beginning, middle or end No clear cut conflict Story presented as a “slice of life” Move slowly Often center on a right of passage Often borrows from the cycles of nature

Formalistic Narratives Artificial Time is scrambled and rearranged to hammer home a thematic point Plots design is obvious Author’s personality is part of the show Interrupted by lyrical interludes

Narrative Types Documentary Avant Garde Fiction Movies

Documentary Deal with facts, real people, places and events Reports on the world Minimal interference with reality 60 Minutes

Avant-Garde Concerned with conveying inner impulses Not written out in advance (sometimes) Like a lyric poem Fantasia

Fiction Movies Like novels and plays Horizontal in development Linear structures Love stories Sleepless in Seattle, The Notebook

Genre Films Specific type of movie A war picture, gangster film, western Distinguished by a characteristic set of conventions in style, subject matter and values Usually directed at a specific audience Saving Private Ryan

Four Classifications Primitive Classical Revisionist Parodic
