Definition: The path of a point moving through space. Lines (thick or thin) can be used to show distance, height, curves and can be used to create texture. In this photo the use of lines show how the stairs curve, and go up. Both the curved rails, and slightly slanted stairs create this illusion. LINES This photo uses the element of lines, by showing how fast the vehicles are moving. By blurring the white headlights and red taillights in a curved line, it appears that the cars are moving so fast, we cannot even focus on one.

Definition: It is the degree of roughness or smoothness. Texture can be used to create objects within a picture, or resemble a similar surface of an object. This picture uses texture to resemble bark. The dark lines show the cracks in the wood and give it a rough look. TEXTURE In this photo, the water beads off of the leaf, this creates the idea in our minds, that the leaf has a rubbery surface. Texture is also seen where the veins are in the leaf.

Definition: The relationship of the area occupied by one shape, in comparison to another. Size can organize and attract. Size can also help to emphasize an idea. In this photo, size is used to attract you to the small rock because it is such a dramatically different size than the rest. SIZE The size of the middle object attracts your eyes because it is bigger than the rest. You can also see the designs in the bigger object better so you look at it more than the rest.

Definition: The quality of an object or substance with respect to light reflected by the object. Colors in a piece of art or photograph, can convey certain moods and emotions. In this picture, the colors of the flowers make create a calm aroma. The colors are soft and are blended together slightly. COLOR The house in this picture is decorated with vibrant, bright colors! This creates a happy/excite/fun mood based around the house.

Definition: an object, form, or figure that is repeated. The repetition of color or design can help pull together a piece of art. By making slight differences in the repeated, can reinforce the message you are communicating. In this photo slight differences in Each stamp make the piece less boring, drawing more attention to it. REPETITION This piece of art uses repetition but also has slight changes in the shapes. One being the darkness and the other being, circles in some and not in others.

Definition: when two parts of a design or page layout are dramatically different. The greater the difference, the greater the contrast. Contrast helps emphasize certain parts, drawing the lookers eyes towards it. In this photo, the contrast is very dramatic. By having the background bright yellow, and the bird black, the bird automatically pops out, and draws your eyes directly towards it. CONTRAST This photo has contrast, but not as much as my other example. In this photo the black and red are extremely different. The green in her eyes also pop because of the other darker colors.

Definition: creates a focal point. Emphasis makes one component, seem more prominent than others. It draws the eye to it. It is also closely related to contrast. This photo uses contrast to create emphasis on the tree. By have a black and white background, and an orange tree, your eye is immediately drawn to the tree. EMPHASIS This photo also uses contrast to emphasis the odd face. It also puts the sad face on it to emphasize the idea.

Definition: Evenly distributes elements, so the work isn’t crowded, and graphics don’t overpower the text. There are certain types of balance, such as symmetrical balance, and asymmetrical balance. This photo has balance because it is symmetrical. BALANCE This photo is asymmetrical, and therefore has balance.

Definition: The style and appearance of printed matter. It is laid out on a page to best achieve the desired visual effect. It helps to convey the meaning of the reading matter.. This photo conveys the meaning using typography. It shows the names of countries and where they are situated on the map. TYPOGRAPHY This photo uses typography in the shape of a water droplet. The words in the droplet explain water etc.
