Presentation transcript:

What is collage ? Collage is a composite image created by cutting and pasting together bits and pieces of “found images”. Found images can be anything and come from any source, from old photo’s and artwork to actual objects. Collage remains flat on the 2-dimensional surface.

Computer generated collage Computer generated collage uses the same concepts and techniques except… computer graphics are used to create better blends, smoother transitions and the illusion of transparency.

How are mosaic and montage different from collage ? In a collage the individual pieces loose their identity to become a part of the whole image. A montage creates an image by allowing the individual units to keep their integrity. A mosaic keeps the individual images separate, but uses them as tessera to create a whole.

The “window” technique The window technique works by cutting a hole through an image so that something behind will show through.

The “slit” technique This technique allows you to create a more realistic contour and joining of images. The edge of an object is slit, carefully following the contour, and another object is slid through.

The “replacement” or “overlay”. This removes the entire background or some other large area, and replaces it with something else.

The design problem Design should show a focal point. Design should use at least three pieces of reference. Edges and lines should flow and blend smoothly. Edges should be clean and well camouflaged. The design should be well balanced. –Five symmetrical sketches –five asymmetrical sketches The collage should be narrative, telling a story or communicating an idea. –Written explanation to be included on the back May include hand drawing, but not as a majority of the image. May combine realistic images and artwork. No three dimensional items.
