Tools of a Geographer SWBAT apply elements of a map in order to effectively utilize maps for multiple purposes: Map Grids, Relative Location, & Absolute Location.

Map Titles and Symbols: Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park  Follow Poole’s directions to complete the map.  Let’s Get started…  Circle the name of the main highway that is a paved road that runs through the State Park.  Label the “Gold Discovery Site” located the furthest north along the South Fork American River  Label John Marshall’s Monument in H4  Label Olde Coloma Theatre near the intersection of Monument Road and Cold Springs,” the eastern most building in the park.  Put a square around the name of the only road to cross over a river in D7.  Label Monroe Ridge Trail, the western most trail in the park.  Label “Mt. Murphy Road,” the only road located in C8  Please write down directions for getting from the “Mill Site” historical monument located just south of the “Gold Discovery Site” to the “ Jail ruins” located at the corner of Brewery St. and Back St.

Relative & Absolute Location  Relative Location  “ My house is near the Walmart by Kennedy.”  “I live across the street from TJ.”  Absolute Location  “ My address is th street.”  “I live on the corner of 32 nd and Vine.”

Exit Slip:  Which one do you think is better (absolute or relative location)?  Explain Why.  Now identify which directions from our map were relative location and which were absolute.
