Topographic maps Description: a two-dimensional way of showing a three- dimensional image of Earth’s elevations Description: a two-dimensional way of showing a three- dimensional image of Earth’s elevations Importance: helps people like geologists, hikers, campers & anyone else who deals with the importance of the height of the land. Importance: helps people like geologists, hikers, campers & anyone else who deals with the importance of the height of the land.

Topographic maps show contour lines (elevation and landforms), hydrography (rivers, lakes, marshes), transportation (roads, trails, railroads, airports), vegetation, boundaries, survey markers, urban areas, buildings, and a variety of other features. Topographic maps show contour lines (elevation and landforms), hydrography (rivers, lakes, marshes), transportation (roads, trails, railroads, airports), vegetation, boundaries, survey markers, urban areas, buildings, and a variety of other features.

Topographic Maps (cont’d) Contour lines show the differences in elevation. Contour lines show the differences in elevation. Contour interval shows the change in height. Contour interval shows the change in height. Contour lines will never touch or intersect (cross) Contour lines will never touch or intersect (cross) Can be combined with geologic maps. (show the type, age, and shape of various rock formations). Can be combined with geologic maps. (show the type, age, and shape of various rock formations).

Reading Topographic Maps Circles = hill, mountain, etc. Circles = hill, mountain, etc. Circles with hachure marks = depression Circles with hachure marks = depression Contour lines crossing a stream valley will form a "V" shape pointing in the uphill (and upstream) direction Contour lines crossing a stream valley will form a "V" shape pointing in the uphill (and upstream) direction Distance between lines  Distance between lines  –Far apart = gentle slopes –Close together = steep slopes Scale  a certain distance on the map is equal to a certain distance in real life Scale  a certain distance on the map is equal to a certain distance in real life

Geologic maps Show the type, age, and shape of various rock formations Show the type, age, and shape of various rock formations Geologic maps use color to show the different types of rock. Geologic maps use color to show the different types of rock.

Soil Maps Are used to show the different types of soil in an area. Are used to show the different types of soil in an area. Important for construction, farming, etc Important for construction, farming, etc

Angel Island Lab Purpose: To create a topographic map of Angel Island Materials: Play-Do, rolling pin (marker), plastic knife, topographic map of Angel Island, scissors, paper towels Procedure: 1.Groups: paper cutter (1), clay roller (2), clay cutter & builder (3) 2.Starting with sea level, use scissors to cut a pattern for each contour interval in the model. Pattern for: sea level, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, Using a marker as a rolling pin, make a clay “pancake” for each contour interval (8 total) 4. Lay the sea level pattern on top of one of your pancakes and use your knife to cut around the edges 5. Repeat with each layer and stack one on top of the other. **Make sure you pick a “NORTH” before beginning and stick with it!!

Exit Ticket 1. What kind of information can be gathered from a topographic map? 2. On a topographic map, what does the contour line represent? #3-5 Use the map below: 3. According to the diagram, what is the approximate difference in elevation between point A and point B? 4. What is topographic point 1 actually displaying, based on the elevation levels? 5. According to the diagram, what is the highest point of elevation on the map? Map 1: Contour interval = 10 ft. B = 50ft. C = 60ft.
