RaDIATE Meeting May /28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 1

Agenda RaDIATE News Status Updates Stage 1 on Be Stage 1 on Graphite Stage 1 on W? BLIP graphite progress DPA and gas production modeling Discussion of miniature and micro-scale testing validation 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 2

RaDIATE News MOU Currently hung up in BNL site office CI which will not review it because it is too vague, although PNNL site office CI and Chicago CI AND DOE HQ have approved Post-doc recruitment PO is in place! Advertisement should be placed Interviews planned for July 12 TRITON (?) 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 3

RaDIATE News (2) PASI Workshop at RAL held April 5-8 HPT group (WG1) reviewed and catalogued capabilities of participating institutions R&D activities needing support RaDIATE plays a central role Heard talks from Barry Jones, Steve Roberts, Kavin Ammigan, Nick Simos Recommendation to provide input and support for TRITON ion beam facility WG1 Report will be placed on RaDIATE web-site (downloads page) RaDIATE represented at IPAC13 with 2 posters/papers Posters and pre-prints will be placed on RaDIATE web-site (downloads page) 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 4

RaDIATE News (3) IPAC13 connections Alessandro Bertarelli –CERN Working on Collimator R&D HRMT-14 Radiation damage in Mo, graphite, and new Mo/graphite hybrid with Nick Simos at BLIP Juan Knaster –IFMIF/EVEDA Project Leader Interested in Project X spallation source for fusion material testing Open in sharing miniature testing techniques and IFMIF plans for sample testing/evaluation (already sent 7 papers) 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 5

Status Reports Stage 1 Beryllium/Tungsten Status (B. Jones) Stage 1 Graphite Status (B. Marsden) Stage 1 Tungsten (B. Jones) BLIP status (N. Simos) DPA and gas production updates to IMT (B. Hartsell) Reminder: Final report due in June/July timeframe 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 6

IMT Table Stage 1 teams need to decide soon whether we can work with the materials we have or whether we will need new irradiations High energy protons (BLIP) Lower energy ions (facilities?) Do we need triple beam facility? 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 7

Specimen size/technique discussion What miniature specimen standardized tests are being used for radiation damage testing? Are these validated for graphite? Has micro-mechanics techniques been validated or empirically correlated for Be and W? Should we be engaged in validation testing of either miniature or micro-mechanics techniques for our materials in the near term? What can we exploit/leverage from past and current work (IFMIF, PNNL, etc…)? 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 8

Action Item List from March Start Post-doc recruitment/Expedite PO for post-doc associated costs (Roberts, Hurh, Densham) Continue to investigate tungsten/tantalum under-prediction of DPA for ISIS targets (S. Brooks) Continue work to prepare for graphite/C-C composite bend testing at BLIP (Ammigan, Simos) Investigate further availability of irradiated materials for testing (esp Be at CERN and AP-0) (Hurh/Ammigan) 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 9

Action Item List from March (2) Continue work on Be lit study, graphite lit studies and W studies? (All) Review/contact MSU team’s plans for UL and UED work to explore radiation damage mechanisms (S. Roberts, P. Hurh, J. Marrow, F. Pellemoine, Bollen, Mittig) Arrange for April/May Meeting (Hurh/Ammigan) 5/28/13P. Hurh RaDIATE May 2013 Meeting 10
