Population pyramids

Population pyramids present a quick picture of a country's population distribution by age and sex. We are able to forecast and anticipate future events in a country by using the population pyramids. It is also able to identify past events that might have caused major changes in the population of a country.

What would account for the large number of children in the age? End of World War II THE BABY BOOM!!!

Note the movement of the baby boomers. Is the US populaiton growing in the next 50 years? Remember, we are developed. Don’t forget: IMMIGRATION! Boomers

Can you anticipate what the future holds for one of the world’s most densely populated developing countries?

What accounts for China’s drop in percentage of population growth? Can you see the major problem China faces now and in the future regarding population? # of males to females!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has China’s growth rate gone down? Has China’s population declined?

Demographic momentum Much like applying the brakes, it takes time and distance for the car to actually stop. The same is true with a declining growth rate and the population going down.

Boomers. What does the future hold for the population of Germany?

How will a refusal to allow immigration effect Japan in the future?

Dependency ratio The percentage of the population above or below the standard age to work. They must be supported by those working.

Doubling time – the number of years it takes for a population t double. 3.5% birthrate, it will take 20 years. Divide 70 by the growth rate to determine doubling time. Growth rate = cbr – cdr +- immigration/emigration The growth rate of Burkina Faso is 4.2%. How long will it take the population to double from its current 18 million? 17 years

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXX What could account for such an unusual shaped populatin pyramid? There was a shortage of “men” in 1946 as a result of?

A military base

Lawrence, Kansas Home of the University of Kansas

Naples, Florida Large retired population

The Baby Boomers

The future of population according to Thomas Malthus. Population grows exponentially (geometric) while food supplies grow arithmetically. Nature would limit exceeding carrying capacity by famine, wars, and disease.

An opposing theory was proposed by Esther Boserup. She proposed that a larger population would stimulate innovation and development that would find technological ways to increase food supplies.

TIME magazine added instructions On the back, you will write three paragraphs defining your main topic. Write as a news story. This should be from 200 to a maximum of 250 words. Double space. Make certain you include a thesis statement and a conclusion. 14 point type, 1” margins. You may glue the story to the back of your cover or print on the back. You must show that you have an understanding of your topic, using real examples, dates, people etc.... You need to have 5 underlined, IMPORTANT facts in your story. The fact that something is “blue” is not a fact.
