HearingJesus’Call John 17:15-19

In John 17 we hear Jesus calling us to live as the sent people of God.

I.Knowing Jesus’ Call A. The Mission A. The Mission Hearing Jesus’ Call

John 20:21 – Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” Hearing Jesus’ Call

I.Knowing Jesus’ Call B. The Dangers Hearing Jesus’ Call

John 1:1 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:2 – He was with God in the beginning. John 1:3 – Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

John 1:4 – In him was life, and that life was the light of men. John 1:5 – The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 1:9 – The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. John 1:10 – He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

1)Conservative Error Motto: Retreat! Action: We isolate ourselves from the world. Two Errors

“People resist mission because they are under-discipled, but they are also under-discipled because of the absence of any missional challenge.” “We say, take people into mission, confront them with the risk of godly service, and we guarantee they will be desperate for a biblical perspective on life.” Michael Frost and Alan Hirsch, The Faith of Leap

2) Liberal Error Motto: If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em! Action: We compromise with the world. Two Errors

1John 2:15 – Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. Compromise with the World

I. Knowing Jesus’ Call C. The Resource C. The Resource Hearing Jesus’ Call

John 10:36 – what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? Hearing Jesus’ Call

II. Following Jesus’ Call A. Individually B. Corporately 1. Macro-Church 2. Micro- Church Hearing Jesus’ Call

Do you hear Jesus’ call?
