THE SERVICE 1 Racket and ball start together 3 Racket and ball meet, racket being thrown at ball. Hit the ball as high above the head as possible. 2. Starting with the racket and ball together, separate them by the racket arm moving down and back, the ball arm moving up Essential Principles Of The Service: The ball must be hit by the server before it touches the ground. The ball must land in a specific area - the service box - and be hit from a specific place - behind the baseline TEACHING POINTS:

Open the face of the racket on the forward swing to lift the ball Have a high follow through Keep the weight moving forward Use disguise to deceive opponent(s) Hit to the baseline for greatest effect Move to the net following a successful lob THE LOB (forehand pictured) If you are successful with this shot, experiment with topspin

TEACHING POINTS: The drop shot removes pace from the ball. The ball should drop just over the net Disguise is essential Play as a lob right up until point of contact, the suddenly slow down the speed of the swing. Play the shot from service and not baseline to ensure opponent has not enough time to read the shot THE DROP-SHOT (forehand pictured) Mastered this? Try and fool your opponent using a backhand drop shot or a stop- volley!

TEACHING POINTS: Adjust body position until the ball is in the right place. This shot should be hit side on, on the volley. You will probably need to move back as this shot should be played just in front of you. Keep eyes on the ball throughout the shot Use the ball arm for balance Drop racket behind the head for maximum backswing and power As the ball arrives, throw racket head up to meet it as you would for a serve It is the timing that is important… do not lose control by smashing too vigorously!!! THE SMASH A highly powerful and fast shot, played to your opponents baseline
