Propaganda Social control through advertisements

Do Now What are some advertisements you have seen a lot of in the past few weeks? Think of what you see on T.V., billboards, and in magazines. Describe at least three that you are familiar with. What are they selling? Do they use a mascot (like the Geico gecko)? How do they make you feel?

Propaganda Selective set of messages aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of large numbers of people

Propaganda usually tries to obtain an emotional response by touching on: Morals Feelings of obligation Patriotism

Propaganda Techniques So many ways to brainwash, so little time…

Glittering Generalities Vague, sweeping statements Suggest different things to different people Appeal to peace, freedom, honor, glory, etc.

Transfer A well respected object transfers respect to message Emotional symbols used (flags and crosses)

Testimonial A respected person or a person with experience is in ad Person endorses by giving their stamp of approval Audience expected to follow example

Bandwagon Persuade the audience to follow the crowd Plays on emotions and membership to respected organizations

Guilt Makes audience feel as though not taking action, or taking the wrong action would have consequences.

Plain Folks Attempts to convince the audience that the speaker is from similar backgrounds Attempts to connect with the audience Wants audience to take similar actions

Satire Making fun of something in order to draw attention to it or correct it.

Which technique?

Questions to ask yourself Who does this message benefit? Why was it produced? Whose point of view is it?

Group Work-The Ad Agency Working with your group, create an advertisement for the world of Fahrenheit 451 using one of the propaganda techniques you learned today. The idea is that your ad would be broadcast on parlor walls or on city streets to convince the populace to believe one of the following three ideas: Reading is bad! You need to buy a new Wall TV!
