Rate and review the vocabulary words with your partner legendarysatisfiedannoyed vainrecommendseldom This week we will continue to read The Chilin Purse retold by Linda Fang. This selection is a folktale. Like other genres we have studied, folktales have certain characteristics of folktales. Knowing the characteristics of the genres helps readers understand characters and plot events in narrative.

 What are the three purposes for reading  Fill in team score sheets and begin new team score sheet 1.To be informed 2.To follow directions 3.To be entertained

Folktale characteristics Stories that have been told through generations Characters have distinct traits Has a simple problem Teaches a moral lesson

Think-Pair –Share and think of some folktales you have read in the past Retell the story as a team. Number 1 begin and tell story in sequence Make a prediction about what you think is going to happen in the story. Use evidence from the story to support you prediction. Who is Hsiang-ling?

Pages “Anansi’s Fishing Expedition” As I read this part of the story, I could tell that Anansi and Anene had distinct traits. Anansi was very lazy and thought he was very smart. But Anene was the one who was very wise. He managed to trick anasi into doing the work many times. These distinct traits are another characteristic of folktales. Also the repetition of Anene’s tricks is another characteristic of folktales.

 Preview Team Talk questions. 1. Why did the marriage procession stop 2. Why did Hsiang-ling give away the purse? What does this show about her? 3. How did Hsiang-ling’s life change after the flood? 4. What is Hsiang-ling’s problem? How is this a characteristic of a folktale?

 Read with partners – Clarify unknown words using sticky notes  Restate as you read  Read pages silently  If you finish ahead of your team reread page 197 for fluency.
