3 Senators are Responsible for: Charting the strategic direction of SWE by developing and adopting the long-range goals for the Society Developing and/or adopting statements of external policy on issues or positions that have broad implications for the professional environment and the Society as an organization Conducting essential dialogue on long-term trends and issues of common interest

4 Additional Expectations Include: Setting dues for all individual grades of membership, including allocation percentages of funds rebated to sections, members at large, and regions Establishing policies on the use and restrictions of the contingency funds of the Society Approving changes to the Society’s trademarks or other emblems Approving changes to the Society bylaws Approving changes to the number of regions or regional boundaries Considering and, if necessary, voting upon other business brought before the senate from throughout the Society Page 4 As the “voice of the members” senate input is sought in various ways throughout the year

8 Special Projects Committee The committee is responsible for: Reviewing any special project proposal brought forward and provide opinion on whether the request should be funded or not as it was written The BOD has final approval of proposals The committee is comprised of: Deputy Speaker of the Senate—Committee Lead 4 to 6 senators from at least 3 different regions (international included) 2 to 3 members from the Finance Committee There have been 3 requests since the inception of this process

9 Strategic Initiatives Committee Previously Mega Issues Committee Performs research & develops white papers to facilitate society’s dialogue on strategic initiatives Solicits ideas from SWE members for future initiatives that align with society’s strategic plan Assist with prioritization and selection of proposed strategic initiatives Past example of committee’s work is the SWE Work Life Integration Playbook eBook All Members are invited to join this committee

10 FY16 Special Senator Up to 2 Special Senators can be elected per FY and have the same rights as all other Senators Special Senators may participate in any Region meeting and may request feedback, especially in areas of her expertise. The Strategic Initiatives Committee will be specifically looking at small businesses and entrepreneurs this year. The Senate has Elected Pam Dingman for FY16 Pam is a longtime member of SWE. She is an entrepreneur and recipient of SWE's Entrepreneur Award. She is an elected county engineer with a knowledge base in local government advocacy.
