Understanding the Constitution

Preamble of the Constitution

Federal System Framers wanted to create a government that protected the rights of its citizens. To do this, they set up a federal system of government which divided powers between the states and the federal government. This is called federalism.

Legislative Branch 2. Legislative Branch=Congress 3.Congress is made up of two houses; the Senate and the House of Representatives. 4.House of Representatives: A.435 members B.Must be 25 years old C.Live in the state they were elected D.U.S. citizen for 7 years E.Serve two-year terms

Senate 5. Each state has 2 senators. 6. Senators must: be 30 years old Live in the state they represent U.S. citizen for 9 years U.S. vice president serves as the president of the Senate.

Executive Branch 7. President=head of the Executive Branch 8. The President must be: Native-born U.S. citizen 35 years old President can only serve two terms.

Judicial Branch 10.Judicial Branch= series of federal courts that are headed by the Supreme Court. 11. President appoints justices. Supreme court justices can serve for life.
