The Family & the Home Lesson 11: Problems Facing Families

Family Problems  Family problems are as old as Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel (Gen. 3-4)  Why problems? When sin enters into the family there will be a problem one way or the other!  Today, we hear of many “broken homes,” “dysfunctional families,” “fragmented families,” etc. Family problems lead to nation problems!

Family Problems  Problem with same-sex marriages (Rom. 1:24-26)  Problem with divorce (Mt. 5:32; 19:9; Mk. 10:11- 12; Lk. 16:8; Rom. 7:2-3)  Problem with roles (Eph. 5:22 – 6:4): many will not fulfill the roles that God has given in the home for the man, the woman, and the children

Family Problems Misc. problems…  Marriage “let downs” where couples stop acting right (courtesy, compliments, self- respect, loving sacrifice, selflessness, trust, etc.)  Selfishness, anger, unjust criticisms, nagging, etc.  Alcohol, drugs  Sexual immorality, middle-aged “fling”

Family Problems  Gossip, meddling (Prov. 18:8; 1 Tim. 5:13)  Absenteeism: spouses growing apart, parents abandoning the children  Worldliness (Rom. 1:18-31; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; Gal. 5:19-21; Eph. 4; Col. 3; 1 Jn. 2:15-17)  Evil influence from the outside: movies, music, media, Internet, friends, etc. (Prov. 1:10; 13:20; 1 Cor. 15:33)

The Broken Home Broken homes lead to…  Child abuse, child neglect, orphans  Immorality, criminal activity  Irreligion, unbelief, unfaithfulness

Review Questions 1. Who was the first family with problems and what was the root cause of their problems? 2. What are the family problems discussed in this lesson?
