PROGRESS MONITORING REFRESHER CELEBRATIONS BRING YOUR PROGRESS MONITORING BOOKLET REVIEW THE SKILLS TO PROGRESS MONITOR QUICK CHECKS (FOR ALL THE MEASURES) AND THE LONG VERSION WALK THROUGH A STUDENT EXAMPLE TEACHERS GIVE EXAMPLE DRAW AIM LINE CLASSROOM LEVEL PLANNING

WHAT IS PROGRESS MONITORING? YAKITY YAK, DON’T TALK BACK… PROGRESS MONITORING IS A SCIENTIFICALLY BASED PRACTICE THAT IS USED TO ASSESS STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AND EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INSTRUCTION. PROGRESS MONITORING CAN BE IMPLEMENTED WITH INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS OR AN ENTIRE CLASS. AMERICAN INSTITUTES FOR RESEARCH AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, OFFICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

HOW DOES PROGRESS MONITORING WORK? THE STUDENT’S CURRENT LEVELS OF PERFORMANCE ARE DETERMINED AND GOALS ARE IDENTIFIED FOR LEARNING THAT WILL TAKE PLACE OVER TIME. THE STUDENT’S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IS MEASURED ON A REGULAR BASIS (WEEKLY OR MONTHLY). PROGRESS TOWARD MEETING THE STUDENT’S GOALS IS MEASURED BY COMPARING EXPECTED AND ACTUAL RATES OF LEARNING. BASED ON THESE MEASUREMENTS, TEACHING IS ADJUSTED AS NEEDED. THE STUDENT’S PROGRESSION OF ACHIEVEMENT IS MONITORED AND INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES ARE ADJUSTED TO MEET THE INDIVIDUAL STUDENTS LEARNING NEEDS. AMERICAN INSTITUTES FOR RESEARCH AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, OFFICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PROGRESS MONITORING? WHEN PROGRESS MONITORING IS IMPLEMENTED CORRECTLY, THE BENEFITS ARE GREAT FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED. SOME BENEFITS INCLUDE: ACCELERATED LEARNING BECAUSE STUDENTS ARE RECEIVING MORE APPROPRIATE INSTRUCTION; MORE INFORMED INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS; DOCUMENTATION OF STUDENT PROGRESS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY PURPOSES; MORE EFFICIENT COMMUNICATION WITH FAMILIES AND OTHER PROFESSIONALS ABOUT STUDENTS’ PROGRESS; HIGHER EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS BY TEACHERS; AND FEWER SPECIAL EDUCATION REFERRALS. AMERICAN INSTITUTES FOR RESEARCH AND THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, OFFICE OF SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS

TOP 6 REASONS WHY WE PROGRESS MONITOR? 1. INFORM INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS BASED ON THE REVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF STUDENT DATA. 2. MONITOR, ADJUST, AND TARGET INSTRUCTION 3. DETERMINE EFFECTIVENESS OF INTERVENTIONS 4. EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INSTRUCTION 5. CAN CHANGE OUTCOMES FOR STUDENTS 6. ASSIST SCHOOLS IN PLANNING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

DETERMINE THE RATE OF IMPROVEMENT (ROI) 1.GIVE BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT 2.SUBTRACT A STUDENT’S SCORE FROM THE END-OF-YEAR (EY) BENCHMARK GOAL, 3.DIVIDE BY THE NUMBER OF MONTHS REMAINING IN THE SCHOOL YEAR THIS WILL GIVE AN APPROXIMATE AMOUNT OF GROWTH FOR EACH MONTH EY GOAL – STUDENTS SCORE/ # MONTHS LEFT IN YEAR = ROI = 11/8 = 1.3 PHONEMES A MONTH TO REACH EY GOAL
