Report on ECFA Gerard van der Steenhoven Based on plenary ECFA meeting of 26 Nov. CERN Issues: – Business as usual (chair, CERN, DESY) – ESGARD / CARE matters (  CARE, EuroTeV, Eurisol ) – Elections But: – Information not up-to-date: o Unfortunate timing NuPECC and ECFA meetings…. o Walter Henning can give you a recent update….

Plenary ECFA Gerard van der Steenhoven Draft agenda plenary ECFA meeting of CERN SEVENTY-SEVENTH PLENARY ECFA MEETING Friday, 24 June 2005 at 9.30 a.m., CERN - Council Chamber 9.30 a.m.1. Approval of the Draft Agenda 9.35 a.m.2. Approval of the Draft Minutes 9.45 a.m.3. Chairman's Report (B. Foster) a.m. COFFEE a.m.4. European Linear Collider Steering Group matters (T. Akesson) a.m.5. Report on EPOG, Eur. Part. Phys. Outreach Gr. (E. Johansson) p.m.6. Report on GSI activities (W.H. Henning) p.m. LUNCH 1.30 p.m.7. CERN Matters (R. Aymar) 2.15 p.m.8. DESY Matters (A. Business as usual (26 Nov. ‘04) Gerard van der Steenhoven Chair (Brian Foster) + discussion afterwards – ITRG has selected cold (SC) technology, but not a design, which may deviate from TESLA considerably – OECD consultative group now replaced by Funding Agencies meetings on the Linear Collider (FALC) but what about the small countries (not in FALC)? – International Linear Collider (ILC): o Accelerating gradient of 35 – 40 MV/m is optimal for costs. o A lot of discussion on organizational matters….. o Test your knowledge of acronyms (next page)!

Coordinates work in coming years

CERN & DESY (26 Nov. ‘04) Gerard van der Steenhoven CERN (R. Aymar) + discussion – Progress on LHC + 4 experiments, still aimed for 2007 – Prospects fixed-target programme: continuation in 2006 hinges on additional manpower from Member States – ALICE (but ask HA Gustafsson for update!) o Many major problems solves (bump bonding, HPTDC, software) o Very tight schedule for ITS, redesign FEE of TRD DESY (A. Wagner) + discussion – HERA: 94 pb -1 in 2004 (record); expect 0.7 fb -1 by 30/6/’07 – XFEL: 9 EU partn. (MoU), Plan Approval signed (28/9/04)

ESGARD etc. Gerard van der Steenhoven ESGARD (= EU Steering Group on Accel. R&D): – Successful strategy for preparing EU – FP6 proposals – CARE: coordinated accelerator research in Europe (I3): o 4 JRA’s for SRF, Photo-injector, HI proton injector, HF magnets o 3 Networking activities: ELAN (e + e - coll.), BENE ( fact) and HEHIHB (LHC lumi upgrade). o Successful kick-off meeting in Nov at DESY. – Approved FP6 Design Studies: o EUROTeV: concerned with LC generic matters (for ILC & CLIC) o EURISOL:  -beams  ask G Fortuna!

Elections + AOB Gerard van der Steenhoven Elections: – New chair: Prof. Torsten Akesson (Lund, Sweden) – Three year period starting in July 2005 AOB: – 2005 timetable: o r+pECFA at CERN: 24 June 2005 o rECFA in Amsterdam (site visit): Sept o r+pECFA at CERN: 1-2 December 2005
