THE SIX FOOD GROUPS

INTRODUCTION Eating healthy and having good nutrition is important for you to have strong bones and grow big and tall! All the foods we eat are categorized into 6 groups, known as “The Food Guide Pyramid.”

DIRECTIONS Together we will learn the 6 food groups, what foods are in each group, and how many servings you need of each group every day. Pay attention! There will be a quiz at the end.

INFORMATION The Food Guide Pyramid was developed by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). It is a tool to help you make healthy eating choices.

INFORMATION The Food Guide Pyramid is divided into 6 categories: Grains, Fruits, Vegetables, Protein/Meats, Dairy, and Fats/Oils.

INFORMATION Grains: – You need 6-11 servings a day – Includes bread, cereal, and rice

INFORMATION Fruits: – You need 2-4 servings a day – Includes apples, oranges, and bananas

INFORMATION Vegetables: – You need 3-5 servings a day – Includes carrots, celery, and broccoli
