Health Introduction

What is Health?  Health is more than the 1) absence of disease.  It encompasses physical, 2) mental and 3) social wellbeing.  Healthy people are able to 4) cope with everyday activities and to 5) adapt to their surroundings.  A 6) lack of disease is a desirable state, but it does not 7) define health.

What is Health?  An 8) individual’s health does not occur in 9) isolation  Many factors 10) combine together to influence the health of individuals.  These factors include:  11) Social  12) Cultural  13) Economic  14) Physical environments  15) Individual behavior  16) Biology  Together, these factors are known as the “determinants of health”

What is Health?  These determinants help describe things like:  17) Where we live  18) How we live  19) Who we live among  Examples of health determinants include:  Housing 20) standards  Employment  21) Education prospects  Income  Access to health care 22) resources  Clean and safe 23) water and food  Relationships with 24) family and friends  Pollution  25) Personal safety
