Module 7 Unit 22 – Welding Prints

Learning Objectives Identify a welding symbol. List the elements of a welding symbol. Explain the meaning of a welding symbol. Identify the basic weld symbols used in welding symbols.

Welding Prints Welding prints combine elements of detail and assembly drawings within one print

Welding Defined Welding: Method of joining metal pieces by melting them along a joint Weld: The junction or strong joint where welded parts are joined

Welding Symbol The welding symbol provides much information to the print reader

Weld Symbol The weld symbol attaches to the reference line of the welding symbol

Weld Location Weld location is indicated by the relation of the weld symbol to the reference line

Weld Dimensions Dimensions of a weld can be specified above or below the reference line or in a general note

Spot Weld Examples The spot weld symbol can be annotated in many ways –(A) Diameter specified –(B) Strength specified –(C) Spacing specified (weld through also) –(D) Quantity specified

Additional Symbol Examples Top to bottom: weld all around, field weld, and melt through

Drawing Example

What is the welding symbol? A symbolic notation used to indicate the type and size of weld to be applied

What are the three basic components of the welding symbol? Reference line, leader line with arrow, and tail

To which side of the joint does the welding symbol point? The “this side” of the joint, not the “other side” of the joint

How does the weld symbol differ from the welding symbol? The weld symbol only indicates the type of weld and appears in the welding symbol, while the welding symbol fully defines the weld.
