Welding Defined Welding: Method of joining metal pieces by melting them along a joint Weld: The junction or strong joint where welded parts are joined
Welding Symbol The welding symbol provides much information to the print reader
Weld Symbol The weld symbol attaches to the reference line of the welding symbol
Weld Location Weld location is indicated by the relation of the weld symbol to the reference line
Weld Dimensions Dimensions of a weld can be specified above or below the reference line or in a general note
Spot Weld Examples The spot weld symbol can be annotated in many ways –(A) Diameter specified –(B) Strength specified –(C) Spacing specified (weld through also) –(D) Quantity specified

What are the three basic components of the welding symbol? Reference line, leader line with arrow, and tail
To which side of the joint does the welding symbol point? The “this side” of the joint, not the “other side” of the joint
How does the weld symbol differ from the welding symbol? The weld symbol only indicates the type of weld and appears in the welding symbol, while the welding symbol fully defines the weld.
