Creating Advanced Materials James Martin High School Computer Multimedia and Animation Instructor: G. Patton From: CHAPTER 17 – 3DS MAX AND ITS APPLICATIONS

1. What are the compound material types? Blend Composite double sided Morpher multi/sub-object Shellac top/bottom

2. What is the Material Tree? The material tree is a hierarchical structure that allows you to manage various components of a defined material in the Material Editor.

3. How does the composite material type differ from the blend material type? The composite material type allows you to “layer” up to 10 different materials over a base material. The blend material type is used to produce a mix of two different materials.

4. If you drag and drop a material onto an editable mesh sub-object selection, which type of material is created? Multi/sub-object

5. How does raytracing work? Raytracing is a technique that produces very realistic images by simulating the path of light rays as they move through a scene and reflect off objects.

6. What is the purpose of reflection dimming? The purpose of reflection dimming is to adjust reflections in shadows in a scene.

7. What is a map? A Map is an image applied to a material.

8. What is the purpose of the UVW map modifier? The UVW map modifier is used to place and adjust mapping coordinates on an object.

9. What does UVW stand for?? UVW stands for XYZ as it relates to coordinates on an object, versus coordinates globally.

10. What is the purpose of the Channel: area of the UVW map modifier's Parameters rollout? It allows you to assign more than one set of mapping coordinates to an object.

11. What does transforming a UVW map gizmo at the sub-object level allow you to to do? It allows you to reposition the map on an object.

12. Which Material type can be used to actually add illumination to the scene? Advanced lighting override.
