Reverse Transfer Made Easy: The Four-Year Perspective
New CWU General Education Program
Presentation transcript:

Introductions Aaron Radicke Software Developer/Analyst Office of the Registrar University of Texas at Austin

What is reverse transfer? Students who transfer from two-year institutions to a four-year institution before obtaining their two-year degree can transfer credits from their four-year institution to complete their two-year degree while still pursuing a degree at the four-year institution. Great, right?

A brief glossary 1.DGI – the degree-granting institution, or in this case, the community/junior/other college. 2.Host – the four-year school to which the student has transferred

Cui bono? 1.DGIs 2.Hosts 3.Students 4.Legislatures 5.Mediators – the NSC

The project Goal: provide the NSC a list of candidates and classes The NSC then sorts the list and makes it available to the appropriate school The DGI can download the list of students and classes and assess them for reverse transfer The student and the DGI can negotiate sending a transcript There will be degrees

The design 1.Identify prospective reverse transfer students 2.Obtain their consent to share their information 3.Produce a list of applicable credits earned 4.Identify potential degree-granting institutions 5.Format and transmit this wealth of information Couldn’t be simpler!

Identify prospective reverse transfer students 1.Know your standards ahead of time 2.How many host institution hours? 3.How many DGI institution hours? 4.What kind of hours? 5.Which host institutions?

Obtain their consent to share their information 1.Opt-in versus opt-out 2.Multiple possible points of consent 1.Transcripts 2.Applications 3.Secure communications 3.Revocation of consent 4.Notification

Produce a list of applicable credits earned 1.In-residence 2.Credit by exam 3.AP 4.Transferred credits (yes, I know)

Identify potential degree-granting institutions 1.Multiple internal identifiers 2.NASC, FICE, OPEID-6, OPEID-8 3.Distinct campuses and subdivisions 4.One-way filters

Format and transmit this wealth of information This part is very boring, so while I drone on, here’s a picture of the world’s largest container ship. Each container represents a class record! If I’m still talking, you should probably go back to looking at the boat.

Pain points and character-building experiences 1.Changes in business rules 2.Testing data 3.Over the wall, into the void 4.The NSC error cycle 5.OPEID validation

The power of scripting 1.It’s all just text 2.Using basic coding skills to 1.Add value with statistics and analysis 2.Fix errors on the fly outside of the process band 3.Better vision into the underlying process 3.Homegrown student information systems

The iterative development cycle 1.If at first you don’t succeed (and you won’t)… 2.No plan survives contact with reality 3.The temptations of certainty 4.Changing needs and situations 5.Closer client cooperation
