Alexander Graham Bell: Inventor of the telephone. By: Matt Woods

Alexander Graham Bell’s life.  His life began on March 3, 1847 and it ended on August 2,  He was born in Scotland.  His own mother was deaf and his father taught and helped deaf people speak, called visible speech.  Bell only went to school for five years from the age of 10 to the age of 15, but he never stopped learning.

The Problem  Alexander Graham Bell saw a problem with long distance communication, writing letters took too long to arrive to their destination.  He also saw that all the Morse code dots and dashes got too confusing when made into longer sentences.

Brainstorming  When he identified the problem he thought of ways he could change and improve Morse code.  By thinking of how to make his first telegraph he continued the brainstorming process and then moved on to designing the telephone.

Designing the Telephone  The original telegraph, or telephone, was a wire-based electrical system.  His production of the telephone formed a business as a lot of people know as AT&T.  AT&T stands for American Telephone & Telegraph company.

Building, testing, evaluating, and redesigning the telephone.  In 1876, three days after he received his first patent, Bell and Watson, located in different rooms, were about to test the new transmitter described in the patent.  Alexander Graham Bell had upset a battery, spilling acid on his clothing.

Sharing the product  During the first month of sales, in 1876, he only sold six telephones.  When the phone was sixteen months old he had sold 778 telephones.  The numbers kept growing as the telephone became more popular, and after fifteen years there were five million telephones sold, in just America!  It has taken the telephone 75 to acquire 50 million users, while it took the 13 and the internet just 5 years.
