N ATURALISM Literary movement that was branched off of Realism. Anti-romantic, focused on believable reality rather than overly idealized depictions of life. Humans have limited control over their own destiny, outside factors such as heredity and social conditions were the inevitable determinants. Emphasis on the despondent side of life. Influenced by Darwin’s theory of evolution

A UTHORS Stephen Crane ( ): An American writer who focused on the human mind, pertaining to fear and social isolation. His works include The Red Badge of Courage and The Open Boat. Frank Norris ( ): An American novelist and journalist who sought to emphasize morality.
