Interpreting Motion Graphically A few basics to remember…  The slope of a position-time graph provides velocity information…  Steeper = faster motion.
Interpret The Graph. The graph shows an object which is not moving (at rest). The distance stays the same as time goes by because it is not moving.

Acceleration in Graphs 9/27/2011

Position vs. Time Graph For this graph, where is the velocity positive? Where is the velocity zero? Where is the velocity negative? (HINT: velocity on a position vs. time graph is the same as the slope of the graph) At which points does the velocity change?

Velocity vs. Time Graph For this graph, where is the velocity increasing? Where is the velocity staying the same or constant? Where is the velocity decreasing? Where do you see positive acceleration? Where do you see negative acceleration?

Velocity vs. Time Graph What is the velocity at point A? What is the velocity at point B? What is the average acceleration between points A & B? (a = Δv/Δt) Based on the shape of the graph, where is the acceleration positive? Where is it negative?

Acceleration & Graphs On a position vs. time graph, there is acceleration at any point where the slope (or velocity) is changing… getting steeper, getting less steep, or changing direction. On a velocity vs. time graph, there is acceleration at any point where the slope is NOT zero. Upward slope = speeding up, downward slope = slowing down.
