Southern African Pesticidal Plants Project Workpackage 8: Training & Workshops
Objective Build capacity in SADC scientists and institutes to evaluate, develop and promote the use of botanical pesticides. This is important to ensure forward progression of research beyond the life- time of the SAPP project.
Training Improve the skill base of scientific and extension staff to investigate the knowledge gaps and constraints limiting the use of pesticidal plants Safety – chemistry, vertebrate toxicity Availability – harvesting, propagation, marketing Reliability – chemistry, mode of action
WP 8 Workshops –Habitat surveys and databases –Analytical chemistry & quality control –Horticulture and seed germination –Participatory rural appraisals (knowledge, attitude and practice surveys) –Promotion and marketing
Capacity building Sharing expertise & resources Staff exchange - identify training priorities Forming networks and building bridges with farmers and agricultural authorities Standardize methods, reduce duplication, e.g. protocols, data templates Coordinating activities & scheduling, i.e. project management committee Raising awareness in agricultural sector
