“The Father of Comedy”

LIFE LIFE: Born in Athens between 450 and 445BC. Died in 385 BC. He came from a wealthy family. When he was 17 years old, he began submitting his comedies for the City Dionysia for the first time.

WORKS He belonged to the old comedy genre. His first play(the Banquieters) won 2nd prize at the City Dionysia and then his “Babylonias” won the 1st. He wrote 40 plays of which 11 have survived ; some of which are “The birds”, “Lysistrata”, “The frogs”, “Ecclesiazusae” and “Plutus”.

He featured many other poets in his plays (with Euripides being his “favourite”). His humor made most laugh and he was taken to court at least once.

CHARACTERISTICS OF HIS PLAYS The hero usually escapes from a difficult situation Humor but logic as well Full of details of everyday life Different rythms and associations Iambic dialogue Long lines in anapests or trochees

DEVELOPMENTS He caused many changes in scene and farcical comings. He used many minor characters(at the end of the play). He used 3 principal actors and the leader of the chorus
