Presentation transcript:

Why this book? I have always loved Audrey Hepburn and this movie-even before I really understood what it was about! I thought it was interesting how a movie could reflect the change in America at the time. After reading the book, I can really see how the movie reflects the beginning of the changing attitudes and behaviors seen in our country at that time.

Summary This book is a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s based on the book of the same name by Truman Capote and starring Audrey Hepburn. This author, Sam Wasson, engages readers in the America of the early sixties when a not-so-good girl named Holly Golightly raised eyebrows across the country and influenced fashion, film, and the romantic comedy.

Interesting Johnny Mercer wrote the words to “Moon River” featured in the movie. Both Johnny Mercer and Henry (Hank) Mancini were considered “old news” by the movie industry and decision makers didn’t want them involved, but they wrote such a great song (and the director was a fan) they included the song which became a BIG hit. Author Truman Capote had little say about how the writers altered his book. The party scene in movie took one week to shoot! The movie poster (left) was considered risqué for the time.

Important Info The “little black dress” was quite symbolic for the time. Prior to this, black was reserved for mourning only. Showed characters who were flawed could still have a “happy ending.” Plot line was more about real issues than crazy, quirky comedy of the sixties.

Recommendation I enjoyed this book. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a behind-the-scenes look at the adaptation of a book to a movie. It’s not a fast pace book, but it is full of interesting bits of information. I would give this book 4 stars:
