2.8.1 Power Cabling C. Chryssostomidis, C. Cooke, H. Babaee, J. Chalfant, M. Ferrante Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Goals To improve the routing capability for cable systems in Navy early-stage ship design.

CABLE ROUTING Reserved Space

Reserved-Space Approach Set aside needed space BEFORE many other items are placed. Use defined early stage ship physical structure (via ASSET and LEAPS) as input to allocate space for power distribution Power is part of Early-Stage Survivability Analysis –Enables optimum power placement while options available By positioning power first, necessary power connections for all apparatus have a known location. –Enables apparatus placement for optimum space utilization

Plan – View: Ring Power-Corridor

The Power-Corridor Structure isolation taps (On, Off) cables water barrier

Example: Power-Corridor Layout stern bow

Cable Router Tool System Segments available in template database Open ship database Establish ring bus: –Copy forward and aft segments, add center segments as required for number of zones. –Establish connectivity and create diagram. Connect generator to ring bus: –Copy generator connection template and establish connectivity. Connect PMM to ring bus: –Copy PMM connection template and establish connectivity.

Long-Range Concept Preprocessing step – after ASSET, before S3D. Place “reserved space” blocks in a LEAPS database for the main power corridor. Instantiate components in LEAPS for main power corridor and establish connectivity. Connect power generation, storage, and use devices to power corridor by instantiating components and establishing connectivity. Size components based on power flow. Resolve positioning/overlap conflicts.
