The Pinoy Experience

 Gathered in Stockton, CA to wait for work  Fisheries -Alaska  Service boys- submissive and servile  Farming-filled in jobs left vacant by exclusion  Working nomads

 Sought the company of white women  Dance, gamble, prostitutes, cockfights, pool halls  Stories of sexual prowess  In 1933, the 1880 miscegenation law is changed to include Malays  Pinays were worshipped

 Needed to excluded Pinoys but needed to give up claims on the Philippine  Made a commonwealth and independent after 10 years

 Can’t bring wives over- no picture brides  1930 Jesena vs. Monterey Superior Court  Married Whites  Western culture  English speakers  Married Mexicans  English speakers  Catholicism

 Allows Pinoys in the US to return under government expense  But home was unappealing - no jobs  Did not want to return as failures  Many never returned because of the Great Depression

 Filipino districts were centers for migrants & not places to live  Chinese and Japanese already had retail shops  Many came during Great Depression so there was no money to loan out  Spoke English- so not limited to ethnic jobs
