Developing the Assessment Work Plan and Data Collection Tools Session 3.3 Session 11: 1 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments

Session Objectives After this session, participants should be able to: Use secondary data to identify information gaps to be filled by qualitative assessments Explain the different types of triangulation that could be implemented in qualitative research Develop question guides and data collection tools for use in a rapid qualitative food and nutrition security and assessment in their country of assignment Session 11: 2 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments

Session 11: 3 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments Tomorrow’s Field Assessment Exercise Refer to Handouts 3.2b & 3.2d

Session 11: 4 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments Our Task: Decide how will we get the data we need, and what questions we need to ask

Exercise 3.3 In your previous Groups Based on the compiled desk review (secondary data compilation handout you received), and taking into consideration the assessment objectives, people you will be meeting, and information gaps identified: 1.Identify categories and sub-categories of primary data needed 2.Identify the sources (who) and methods for obtaining this data. (what do we need to inquire about and with whom) 3.Use Template for Exercise min (45 minutes for group work and 25 minutes for plenary discussion) Session 11: 5 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments

Develop Question Guides for each of the following Question Guides are “aide-memoirs” Move from the general to the more specific questions. 5-6 key questions main questions should suffice. Probing questions could be more. Triangulate data (sources and methods) Use participator y tools when appropriate Consider pre-set schedule limitations (work with what’s not ideal). Make sure ask the right questions and include “probing questions” in your guides If you have time, develop reporting forms (particularly for discussions) Refer to the samples of question guides and FGD guides provided to you for guidance Household Interviews Community Discussion Key-Informant Interviews Focus Group Discussion Remember: Exercise 3.3a 150 min (120 minutes for group work and 30 minutes for plenary discussion) Session 11: 8 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments

Session 11: 9 Qualitative Approaches for FS Assessments Good Luck Tomorrow Do not forget to: Take Memos Probe Establish Rapport Be ready to take notes Effectively/Strategically
