Appropriate Online Behavior

Freewrite #1 Why do we need safety rules for using the Internet? Watch Brain Pop “Online Safety” video

Be Smart Be Safe The Internet is NOT anonymous! Your email address, screen name, and password serve as barriers between you and others. You need to maintain this barrier by NOT giving out private information.

Protect Your Identity Online screen/user names should never include personal or identifying information First or last name Address Phone number Date of birth (complete or partial) or age Social Security number Name of School

Screen Names List the screen names that DO NOT have identifying information on your handout. GTaylorplaysGuitar carrie_lewis@gmc.net REMforever Miamisue13 canarielover nymets29 Brandonclassof09 Wellesleygirl namelessjester9

Passwords Passwords should: Be at least eight characters Contain a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols Be changed when its secrecy is in doubt Not contain personal information Not be shared Not be easily guessed Not be provided in an e-mail, even if requested

Why do students feel safe on the Internet? They are in their own home They are behind a screen They are anonymous Etc.

What are some dangers on the Internet? Predators Thieves Bullying Bad sites Hate sites Etc.

Who knows WHAT about You? What is direct information? Information that you deliberately give someone What is indirect information? Information that is gained through knowing things like a school mascot, concerts, etc. Pass out REFERENCE PAGE – Who knows WHAT about You? (page 9 from ISafe Lesson)

Identity Theft What is Identity Theft? The use of your personal information without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes How do you protect yourself against Identity Theft? Do NOT give out your personal information Name Birth date Social Security Number Passwords

Online Strangers & Predators All people MET exclusively online are strangers! How can you protect yourself from online strangers and predators? Choose a safe screen name Do NOT reveal information on the Internet Carefully choose with whom to communicate

REMEMBER the 4 R’s RECOGNIZE   Recognize techniques used by online predators to deceive, groom, or intimidate their victims. Establishes Similar Interests Builds Trust Encourages Secrecy Breaks Down Barriers Makes Threats

REMEMBER the 4 R’s REFUSE   Refuse all requests for personal information, to keep the relationship secret, or to meet in person. Refuse to provide personal information by phone or by email if you didn't initiate the communication.

REMEMBER the 4 R’s RESPOND   Respond assertively by exiting the program, logging off, or turning off the computer. REPORT Report any suspicious or dangerous contact that makes you feel uncomfortable to a trusted adult.

Action Plan At least one change I can make to be safer online is… If time, watch the Digital Etiquette video on Brain Pop – Not ERATE required, but good information that students should know.
