HOW TO RESEARCH

Steps to Research General Research Select topic Focus your topic subtopicsthesis Specific research Notes, SOURCE CARDS, outline evidenceRough draftEditFinal draft

Step 1: do some general searches to find out more information on your topic

Step 2: read up about your topic

Step 3: brainstorm to determine your focus diethabitatbehaviorstatus threatened Breeding programs Cancer You discover a terrible cancer killed many of them in the 1990s…this special cancer is called DFTD…you want to know what effect this has had on the devils You find out that their status is “threatened” because there aren’t many left…you wonder what they are doing about it… You discover there are special breeding programs…these interest you

Step 4: determine the subtopics of your paper Subtopic 1 The basics: an overview of the TD – all the background information needed to understand the topic Subtopic 2 Subtopic 3 Past: what happened to threaten the TD in the past (farmers and disease); what the results were for the TD Present: what are the breeding programs, where, what do they do, etc. Subtopic 4 Future: what does the future hold, what still needs to be done, what can people do, etc.

Step 5: refocus your topic to draft a thesis statement THESIS First killed by farmers and then hit by a targeted strain of cancer, the Tasmanian Devil is a species near the brink of extinction; they are in need of special breeding programs by governments and zoos from around the world in order to ensure their survival.

Step 6: do more specific searches on your subtopics

Step 7: take notes, write up your SOURCE CARDS, compile everything together, draft an outline IntroductionSubtopic A: BackgroundSubtopic BSubtopic C Subtopic DConclusion

Step 8: select quotes or pieces of evidence (from your SOURCE CARDS) to support your ideas

Step 9: write a rough draft, edit draft

Step 10: write a final draft
