The Manhattan Project What? The atomic bombing Where? Hiroshima and Nagasaki Who? From America to Japan When? 6 th August and 9 th August, 1945 Why? America wanted to end WWII a.s.a.p. How? They flew a plane that carried the bomb and dropped it on Japan.

Impacts In Hiroshima, 70,000 people were killed. Others suffered from radiation poisoning and died years after. The total death toll was 200,000 people. In Nagasaki, 40,000 people were killed and there is a total death toll of 150,000 people. The bombing also destroyed buildings and vegetation. The explosion also caused a wind that blew at 440m/s and reached the temperature of 5000°c What is radiation poisoning ? The substance which the bomb let out – radiation. Symptoms: Hair falling out,develop small boils, bleeding body parts

Significance? How much of a difference did it made? It ended the war in the far east immediately. What did it trigger? It helped to trigger the Cold War between Russia(then called USSR) and America + her allies. It led to the Nuclear Arms Race: many different countries developed the atomic bombs and more powerful weapons. It led to the Cuban Missiles Crisis.

Significance? (Cont.) How does it still impact today? Russia doesn’t know how to handle the excess nuclear arsenal that they made. Many people are frightened that the weapons may land in terrorists hands. Many other countries may want to develop nuclear weapons. Testing of nuclear weapon damages the environment and people. What if the bomb hadn’t been dropped? Japan would still have lost and America would have won, but it would have taken more time.
