Reading Reader of the Day/Calendar Schedule Scholastic Book Club- sent home in today’s folder with note to explain Daily 5. DRA levels and how they help you. Increase the amount of time your child spends reading daily. Give books as gifts. Scholastic is a great resource. Let your child see you read. Read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read, read!!!
Writing Write daily! The more they write, the better they get and the more they’ll love it! Have your child read the story to you while pointing at the words. Sit back and enjoy it. Tell them your favorite part. Stories need to have one main idea. Ask your child questions about their story. This will help them add interesting details. Help your child stretch out words to sound them out. Don’t expect them to spell unconventional words (like laugh), just tell them how to spell those. The more they use those words, the better they will get at spelling them.
Math Encourage your child to count objects at home or in books. Locate numbers in everyday places (addresses, grocery store) Compare quantities of items. Use terms like more, less, the same. Skip count in the car 2s, 5s, and 10s. Count backwards. Count backwards by twos, fives and tens. Practice counting money. Count change. See if your child can identify the value of coins. Practice telling time on an analog clock and a digital clock.
