Four Views of A Christian John 17:1-26

Perspective ► Important when viewing something  Incomplete view gives incorrect analysis  Look at only one side of a car before purchase? ► Such is true of a Christian  We are Christians 24/7/365  Different relationships involved

In Society ► A part of the world  In the world, not of the world (John 17:5-17)  Purpose is to influence them  Not become like them (Romans 12:1, 2)

In Society ► Glorifying God in society  Using proper speech (Ephesians 4:29; 5:4; Colossians 4:5, 6)  Respecting civil authorities (Acts 25:11; Romans 13:1-10)  Working to provide for our families (Colossians 3:22-24; 2 Thessalonians 3:10; 1 Peter 2:18)  Treating our neighbors properly (Acts 9:36-43; Romans 12:18)

As a Member of The Church ► Recall the process of becoming a member  Added to the church universal (Matthew 16:18; Acts 2:41-47)  Join a local church (Acts 9:26-31)  No “suitcase Christians” in the New Testament  Can you recall why you obeyed the Gospel?  Why did you became a member of this congregation?

As a Member of The Church ►R►R►R►Responsibilities SSSSubmit to proper leadership (Hebrews 13:17) LLLLive morally upright lives (Romans 16:17, 18) AAAAssemble with the saints (Hebrews 10:24, 25) PPPParticipate in worship (Acts 2:42) FFFFinancially support the work (2 Corinthians 8) DDDDo what one can (1 Corinthians 12:12-31)

As a Spouse ► Marriage is the closest human relationship  One flesh (Genesis 2:24; Matthew 19:6)  Lasts a lifetime (Romans 7:1-3)  Used as an illustration of Christ and the church

As a Spouse ► Duties and responsibilities (Ephesians 5)  Wives be in subjection (vv. 22, 24, 33)  Live godly lives (1 Peter 3:1-6)  Husbands love their wives (vv. 25, 28, 33)  Cherish them (v. 29)  Leave Father and Mother (v. 31)  Provide for their needs (Genesis 3:17-19)  Heirs together (1 Peter 3:1-7)

As a Parent ► Serious responsibility  Children are a heritage from God (Psalm 127:3)  They bring both joy and sorrow  Remember that you were a spouse before you were a parent

As a Parent ► Duties  Fathers lead the family (Ephesians 6:4)  Discipline with love (Hebrews 12:5-11)  Mothers guide the home (Titus 2:3-5)  Be a virtuous woman (Proverbs 31:4, 21, 27, 28)  Affects the church (1 Timothy 3:1-12; Titus 1:5-9)  Let’s not be guilty of “passing through the fire.” (Leviticus 18:21; 2 Kings 21:6)

Parting thoughts ► How are we doing?  In the community  In the church  As a spouse  As a parent ► Have you submitted to God  Affects all of these areas  Why not now?
