Maddie Woodrow and Jamie Stowers Background Info Exploration Route Details
Background Information Ferdinand Magellan was a Portuguese explorer born in 1480 to noble parents. He later enlisted under the Spanish king and went forward with his trip around the world. His goal for this exploration was to establish trade empires in the east.
Exploration Route Magellan started in Servile Spain, he then went Southwest towards South America and stayed along the east coast line of South America. He then went through the water way of the southern tip of South America, now known as the straight of Magellan. He continued North to Hawaii and the Phillippines. During this exploration, Magellan and his crew proved the world was round and named the Pacific Ocean.
Details King Charles V gave Magellan his blessing(and funds) and he took off with is trip around the world on April 10, Magellan had five ships on this voyage and eighteen crew members on each ship when he first started. All of these crew members and ships helped keep the exploration going, due to the number of people that would die along the way, including Magellan himself. In April 1521, Magellan was killed in a battle in the Philippines. His crew then finished the rest of the voyage.
