The United States Emerges as a World Power Ch. 3.7

Early 1900’s China For European Countries and Japan, China=raw materials and land to colonize. For the United States, China=Customers!

After several years of wars with European powers, Japan, and a rebellion against their own dynastic rulers, China had fallen into “spheres of influence.” Japan and the European nations now controlled most of China’s seaports and major areas where raw materials were located.

After the Boxer Rebellion is crushed, the US more or less tells the other nations “this is how it’s going to be.” China remains a divided country, dominated by the major world powers and will remain so until WWII

Remember this?

Japan saw the writing on the wall and began a rapid industrialization, militarization and westernization.

Tom Cruise starred in a movie called The Last Samurai. He plays a U.S. cavalry officer that comes to Japan to train their army in the new weapons being sold to them by the U.S. Cruise is captured and learns to respect the ways of the Samurai, eventually training them and fighting with them against the the new modern Japanese army. Off on a tangent again, but this is a great example of Japan preparing to expand its empire. The previous slide shows pictures from the movie.

Tom Cruise is Victorious!

Russo-Japanese War Japan launches a surprise attack against Russian forces in China and surprises the world by the effectiveness of the new Japanese military. Teddy Roosevelt mediates the peace treaty.

For his work in ending the war with Russia and Japan, TR becomes the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

The United States turns its focus on Latin America Cuba and Puerto Rico are “free” from Spain. Now what do we do with them?

What? Tom Cruise again??? If you saw the movie, it began at Guantanamo Bay. A U.S. military base on “enemy” land???

Tom Cruise is Victorious Again!!!!

And now…the TRUTH about Cuban independence…

Cuba remains under U.S. influence until Fidel Castro’s revolution in the 1950’s
