Chemistry Unit Project By: Joseph Acevedo

Matter, what is it? Matter is anything and everything in the Universe that takes up space.

States of Matter Solids - Particles vibrate. Definite volume and shape. Ex: Wooden Block,Ice Cube, Rock, Metal, TVs. Liquids - Particles slide past each other. Definite volume. Ex: Water, Soda, Juice, Vegetable Oil, Grease. Gases - Particles move very fast. No Definite volume or shape. Ex: Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide,

Physical and Chemical Properties The diffrences are that chemical is how it reacts to heat or water, and physical is color, smell and boiling/melting point. Physical - Color, Smell, boiling point, melting point. Chemical - heat of combustion, reactions with water, electromotive force.

Physical and Chemical changes The diffrence is the chemical changes happen on a molecular level. Physical - Crushing a can, Melting ice, chopping wood, cracking an egg, breaking a bone. Chemical - Burning paper, burning wood, rust forming, baking a cake, frying an egg.

Atom An atom is what matter is made up of. The parts of an atom are an Electron, Proton, and Neutron. Neutron - No charge, neutral. Proton - Positive charge. Electron - Negative charge.

Elements Elements are the basics of everything. Platinum Carbon Oxygen Helium Neon

Compound A compound is something made with one material. They are chemically made, and have a definite composition. Ex:CO CO2 H2O H2O2 NaCl

Periodic Table The Periodic Table is a list of every element The periodic table is a list of rows and columns. To read it, you use the atomic numbers.

Substances and Mixtures Substances are seperated physically, and Mixtures are seperated chemically.

Heterogenous & Homogenous Heterogenous - Any combination of substances that does not have a uniform composition - Sand in water, Smoke, Chicken soup, Protoplasm, Silt in Water Homogenous - Any combination of substances that has a uniform composition- Blood, Orange juice, Hard alcohol, Wine, Brewed coffee.

Solution The process in which a gas, liquid, or solid is dispersed homogenously in a gas, liquid, or solid without chemical change. Water is a solvent and Salt is a solute.

Solubility Solubility is the property of a solid, liquid, or gaseous solvent to form a homogenous solvent.
